How Did We Get Here, 2026

This work examines how political, cultural, and economic systems shape identity from childhood. The work draws from a life lived between environments and considers how values and behaviours are formed through everyday structures such as language, currency, media, and collective thinking.

Across painting, sculpture, and installation, familiar symbols are recontextualized through material and form. The work includes political alphabet cards, a cast silver toy soldier, balloon-formed rifle sculptures, sheep imagery, barbed wire, a sculptural scene of skaters in a bowl reaching upward as money falls from above, and a piñata constructed from devalued Venezuelan currency.

Together this body of work addresses how systems of value are learned, internalized, and performed over time. It questions what remains of identity, belonging, and meaning when the structures that define them begin to destabilize, and how early exposure to these systems continues to shape perception long after childhood.
